Spurred on by exotic films, a swarm of architects and designers emerged from the grayness of the Depression, specializing in tiki style. In 1934, the first tiki bar, Don the Beachcomber, opened in Los Angeles. It was a favorite haunt of Clark Gable. Fishing nets, life jackets, and pieces of wreckage decorated the walls, evoking the Pacific. Later, Vic Bergeron was inspired to open up Trader Vic’s, the first in a series of exotic restaurants with the same name, frequented by Richard Nixon, among other illustrious patrons.

Join beachcombing and record diggin’ DJ Richard “Tab-boo!” Pierson on Tuesday, March 26 @ Maria’s (960 W. 31st) for a tropical exotica treat titled TIKI IS UNIVERSAL, putting everything Tiki together in a meta-Tiki megamix of Hawaiian style steel guitar from Java, hula en clavé, gamelan jazz, the mai-tai of swing-time Tahiti, and any and all other sounds especially dulcet in their familiar foreignness. Richard will be spinning the Polynesian platters that matter featuring rare gems plucked from his collection of crazy bongo rhythms, Calypso soul, steel drumming beats and other cool sounds for this fiery fantasy.
So transport yourself to a tropical isle and take your mind off the last blasts of winter with this monthly excursion into the exotic. Indulge yourself with some tasty tropical cocktails while our groove selector and safari-er hypnotizes you with primal primitive sounds from places and spaces far away.
We’ll also be showing a tropical video collage featuring rare films including lavish Hollywood Technicolor spectaculars, ethnographic films and vintage south seas travelogues.
