With the new year having arrived it’s certainly time to begin afresh, set new agendas, refocus efforts toward creative endeavors and try to adhere to personal resolutions that can hopefully be met. With those thoughts in mind, Maria’s monthly soul and funk showcase “Smokey Joe’s Southside Soul Shack” is devoting its January 4 event on those new adherents and proselytizers of the deep funk sound and the soul revival movement that we are calling “A FUNKY REBIRTH”.

For the past decade a disparate group of musicians and deejays have been reinterpreting and revisiting the sounds and styles of the Black urban American experience of the sixties and seventies that was rooted in blues, R&B, soul, funk and gospel. Certain re-issue labels like the locally based Numero Group with its most recent massive Omnibus 45 Box Set of extremely rare 45 RPM records have led the charge and set a high standard for crate diggers and urban archeologists. Other labels like the Brooklyn-based Daptone Records have given particular focus in its own stable of new artists who have made massive inroads in the alternative rock bar scene like Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Antibalas, The Sugarman 3, The Budos Band, The Poets of Rhythm, The Daktaris, The Mighty Imperials, Lee Fields, Charles Bradley, Binky Griptite, and Naomi Davis. Using a “back to basic” principle Daptone have striven to recreate the tone and texture of older recordings by using analog and not digital at its in-house studio. Similar labels worldwide have been spreading this gospel including Stones Throw, Acid Jazz, Truth & Soul, Freestyle, Now Again, Ubiquity, Tru Thoughts, Timmion and Light In The Attic.

Headed by “Soul Brother From Another Planet” Smokey Joe Bryl, A FUNKY REBIRTH will give special emphasis on this decade-long earnest attempt to recapture the swaggering sweaty soul and hard-hitting funk by a new generation of fervent admirers including those listed above and also the New Mastersounds, JC Brooks & the Uptown Sounds, Speedometer, DeRobert & the Half-Truths, the Bamboos, CSC Funk Band, El Michels Affair, Osaka Monaurail, Spanglish Fly and Nick Waterhouse. To give an added feel to the soulful truth of these recordings A FUNKY REBIRTH will be focusing on vinyl only 45 RPM records that more properly approximate the warmth and underlying grit of these deep funkateers.

The stacks of wax start tracking at 8PM and there is no cover.main
