Maria’s Packaged Goods & Community Bar presents
Featuring Groove Merchant “Smokey” Joe Bryl
Friday November 2 – 8PM-2AM – Free, No Cover
960 W. 31st Street, Chicago, Il. 60608 – 773.890.0588 –

During the sixties and seventies no self-respecting mack-daddy would
make the scene at any of Chicago’s many neighborhood night-time blues
bars, juke joints or discos without a trip to Maxwell Street and more
particularly Smokey Joe’s on the corner of Roosevelt and Halsted, the
mecca for the most current dapper and stylish trend-setting clothing.
Behind its doors, one could find everything from brightly colored
Nehru jackets, flowing paisley patterned shirts, leather jackets
fringed with fur, stripped bell-bottomed pants and disco boots with 4
inch heels. This look and attitude was seen onscreen in downtown
theaters by an emerging cinematic subculture later called
Blaxploitation and its essence of African-American self-empowerment
was perfectly rendered by singer William DeVaughn in his 1972
much-sampled hit “”Be Thankful for What You Got” with its lyrics . . .

Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac
Gangsta whitewalls, TV antennas in the back
You may not have a car at all
But remember brothers and sisters
You can still stand tall
Just be thankful for what you got.
Diamond in the back, sunroof top
Diggin’ the scene with a gangsta lean

To re-imagine and re-live some of this attitude and essence Maria’s
Package Goods & Community Bar is hosting “Smokey Joe’s Southside Soul
Shack” this Friday, November 2. Hosted by crate diggin’ groove merchant
brother from another planet “Smokey” Joe Bryl, the party will feature
the best soul-drenched songs, funk bombs and underground disco beats
from the past and the present. We’re inviting all dapper dudes and hip
mamas to polish and put your dancing shoes on for a night of churning
and burning dance action.

The funk drops at 8PM and continue until 2AM. There is no cover.
