Three Aces presents
Featuring DJ Supreme “Smokey” Joe Bryl
Kick-Off Wednesday, October 3 – 9PM-2AM – Free, No Cover
1321 W. Taylor Street, Chicago, Illinois 60607 –

Recently, there has been a resounding resurgence and re-interpretation
of classic Soul, Funk and Rhythm & Blues. Local bands like JC Brooks &
The Uptown Sound have honed their soulful style with incendiary live
sets that pay homage to the likes of Wilson Pickett and Sam Cooke. In
Brooklyn, seeming youthful 62 year old belter Charles Bradley draws
inspiration from the raw funk and sweaty stage moves that reminds one
of a reborn “Mr. Dynamite!” James Brown while soul sister Sharon Jones
with the help of the ever-present Dap-Kings sift through the sixties
grooves of Memphis and Muscle Shoals. Giving further support to this
renewed soul explosion are other deep funk practitioners like the
Budos Band, the Bo-Keys, the Poets of Rhythm, Slim Moore, Lee Fields
and the Expressions, Breakestra, Kings Go Forth and the Bamboos.

Complimenting this modern re-interpretation is a fervent core of crate
diggin’ deejays who scour record stores, flea markets, thrift stores
and private collections looking for those long-forgotten treasures of
dusty 45s that once packed the dance floors for soul shacks, jazz
bars, chitlin’ circuit clubs and juke joints during the sixties and
seventies. These musical archaeologists search for their own versions
of the Holy Grail; looking to bring to light once again long-forgotten
records that barely reached an audience outside of its own street,
town or region. And not surprisingly, these well-aged recordings still
pack a punch and continue to pack the dance floor today.

To harmonize these two groupings (the old and the new) Three Aces
(1321 W. Taylor) with deejay supreme and brother from another planet
“Smokey” Joe Bryl are hosting a monthly residency aptly titled SOUL TO
THE BONE – A FUNKY SOULFUL STRUT. Kicking off on Wednesday, October 3
(and every following first Wednesday of the month) SOUL TO THE BONE
will lay down the best Funk, Soul and Rhythm & Blues tracks from the
past to the present – and all on 45RPM. With this “back to basics”
ethos, SOUL TO THE BONE will re-kindle the passion and energy of
sixties Soul and seventies Funk and show that it has lost none of its
influence or immediacy.

So get ready to get down and dirty for this floor-shaking and
foot-stomping soul express. As the sadly departed Don Cornelius always
closed “Soul Train” we also send out the refrain “…and as always in
parting, we wish you love, peace… and SOUL!”
